Eidos backs football game with print and ambient drive

LONDON - Computer game company Eidos is kicking off the launch activity for the 2003-2004 season's 'Championship Manager' football PC game with a print and ambient media push focusing on the addictive nature of the game.

The game launches on November 21. Its predecessor for the 2002-2003 season was the fastest-selling PC game in history, with sales of 124,627 in its first week of release.

Ric Williams, Eidos head of marketing, said: "'Championship Manager' already has one of the biggest and most loyal fan bases of any game. The overall aim for the marketing campaign is to push 'Championship Manager' even further into the mainstream, get people talking about it and ultimately create a new generation of brand advocates."

The launch campaign, through Billington Cartmell, includes press ads in men's and football magazines, and poster and in-store promotions ahead of a TV campaign in December.

Press ads will run in men's lifestyle magazines including FHM, Maxim and Loaded, as well as football titles for the next three months.

The ads focus on the idea that to be the best football manager, you may have to forfeit other areas of your life.

One press ad features a condom that expired in May 1999. The headline across the top of the ad reads: "As a manager, your only love is your club."

The ad carries a warning in a box, in a similar style to the health notices on tobacco products, which reads: "Playing may damage your sex life."

The ads tell people to seek help at the game's .

A flyposter campaign will target all major UK cities and towns, along with ads in washrooms in sports bars and pubs, and in-store promotions such as window displays and point of sale.

Playable demos will be available in-store, from the 'Championship Manager' phone line, online, as well as being distributed at football matches. A demo CD will also be carried on the cover of the Official Championship Manager Magazine, produced by Future Publishing, which hits newsstands on the day of release.

A heavyweight PR campaign will target radio, TV and national, regional and lifestyle press with news stories, features, reviews and competitions. An "Addiction Support Group" and "Addiction Helpline" have been set up for women whose lives have been blighted by the game.

'Championship Manager: Season 2003-2004' has been updated to include new features and improvements aimed at bringing players even closer to becoming a real-life manager.

The game comprises four new leagues, a pre-game database editor, the ability to view previously saved matches and updated player, team and competition data for the 2003/2004 season, to help players experience the emotional highs and lows of the job.
