Lara Croft creator Eidos branches out into new media

LONDON - Eidos, the gaming company that gave the world Lara Croft, has launched a new-media division to develop mobile gaming especially for PDAs and interactive television.

As part of the move, Simon Protheroe will step down from the board and become director of new media and online technologies, heading the new-media division.

Eidos has had several recent successes in online gaming, with 'Tomb Raider: The Osiris Codex' on Vodafone Live! and 'Tomb Raider' on Nokia's N-Gage wireless gaming platform. Both games topped the charts on release.

As well as developing games for mobile phones, Eidos said it will look at channels such as broadband games on demand and electronic software distribution.

Michael McGarvey, chief executive officer of Eidos, said: "The creation of the new-media division signals the increasing importance of new media to the growth of the business. I would like to thank Simon Protheroe for his contribution to the board and look forward to his continued support and direction as head of our new-media division."

Eidos also said that Jonathan Kemp, European managing director, is to be promoted to the board after six years with the company.

Eidos suffered a setback over the last year following the long-delayed release of 'Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness', which had been due for Christmas 2002, but finally arrived in the summer to coincide with the launch of the movie starring Angelina Jolie, 'Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life'.
