The arts festival is among 571 brands on this year's Coolbrands list compiled by the Centre for Brand Analysis.
The list has been released annually since 2001 and rates the top brands in the UK. The full list will be revealed on 24 September.
EIF fought off competition from 10,000 brands to make the list, which is judged by a panel from the worlds of design, media, fashion and music and a public vote of more than 3,000 people.
This year's judging panel included fashion blogger Susie Bubble and musician, actor and director Plan B.
Last year's top 20 included The Royal Opera House and agency and concierge service Quintessentially.
Stephen Cheliotis, chairman of the Coolbrands expert council said: "Even in a recession a desirable reputation is vital, so being seen by opinion formers and the British public as a stylish attractive brand, is not only a great compliment but an indicator of success. Competition was fiercer than ever so achieving Coolbrands status is something the Edinburgh International Festival can be truly proud of."
EIF is in its final week and will culminate in a Virgin Money Fireworks Concert on Sunday evening.
