The Economist to launch downloadable audio edition

LONDON - The Economist is to make available online a full audio edition of the weekly magazine offering all of its current affairs, politics, business and scientific coverage in what it claims is a publishing first.

The title, edited by John Micklethwait, said its audio edition would allow listeners to listen to an entire edition of the magazine after downloading it from website.

The service, which is free to registered subscribers of the print edition, has been created in collaboration with Talking Issues, the talking book company, and has been designed to meet the changing needs of busy Economist readers.

Talking Issues said the audio edition would offer word-for-word recordings of all articles published in The Economist, read by professional broadcasters and actors. It will be available to download on Fridays, when the new editions are released.

The downloadable files are in zipped MP3 format, and are compatible with most portable audio devices for listeners who are on the move.

The title, jointly owned by Pearson and the Economist Group, posted a UK circulation of 170,038 in February's ABC figures.
