EastEnders executive producer departs after cast clashes

LONDON – 'EastEnders' executive producer Kathleen Hutchison has left the show after just four months at the helm because of arguments with cast and scriptwriters.

Hutchison, who made her name on BBC shows 'Casualty' and 'Holby City' before moving to Albert Square, is known as as "The Hatchet".

In her brief stint on the show, she axed the Ferreiras, Dirty Den and Kate Mitchell and had plans to swing the axe further.

A report in The Mirror claims a host of the soaps stars, including Barbara Windsor, who is returning as Peggy Mitchell this year, Wendy Richards, who plays Pauline Fowler, and Natalie Cassidy, who plays Sonia Jackson, did not get along with the producer and that other cast members were left fuming at the sackings.

A report in The Sun claims things got so bad that the show was almost taken off air for two weeks due to Hutchison's plot changes.

The BBC says that Hutchison's employment in October was only supposed to be temporary, although the corporation did not mention this at the time of her hiring, when former executive producer Louise Berridge left.

John Yorke, BBC controller of continuing drama series, said: "Kathleen has done a fantastic job of managing 'EastEnders' during this period of change -- I am very grateful to her for all her hard work and for leaving the show in such a strong position for us to build on."

Hutchison added: "I have enjoyed my brief time at 'EastEnders' and wish the show the very best."

Series producer Sharon Hughff, who like Hutchison was just "managing this period of transition", is also leaving.

The corporation is bringing back show heavyweights including story adviser Tony Jordan and head of production Nigel Taylor.
