Graphic design and creative agency NowWashYourHands has been commissioned to develop the film, called 'Read the Signs'. It aims to educate 14- to 21-year-olds to be aware of the signs of mental health problems and to help break down the negative stigma attached to mental illness.
"For this piece of work, we created a 'world of signs', using the graphic language of road signage to illustrate the various ways in which emotional and mental health problems can be detected", Tim Spear, NowWashYourHands' interactive director, said.
"It's important for young people to address emotional issues and look out for their friends. Hopefully, the campaign will go some way to raise awareness of the issues involved," he said.
The film is part of the DoH's youth programme called "Read the Signs", launched by Mind Out for Mental Health, the government's mental health initiative.
It will be broadcast across MTV's five channels in the UK and will also be available online.
The DoH has drawn up a number of road signs, which are shown on its site at . They feature a number of warning signs that indicate someone might be suffering from mental health problems.
The signs include feeling worthless and hopeless, experiencing severe anxiety, panic or fear, changes in sleeping pattern and withdrawing from other people.
