DMGT's Northcliffe expansion plans given the green light

LONDON - The government has approved the Daily Mail & General Trust's plans to buy a number of free and local newspapers owned by Hill Brothers, as part of a move to expand its regional Northcliffe Newspapers publishing arm.

The acquisition includes paid-for weekly titles such as the Leek Post & Times, the Cheadle Post & Times and the Uttoxeter Post & Times, free weekly newspapers in Congleton and Biddulph, eight monthly titles in Cheshire and a weekly property guide.

The titles are believed to be worth around £350,000, although it is not known how much DMGT has offered for the titles.

The Department of Trade and Industry's decision means the deal will not be referred to the Competition Commission.

Recently, Trinity Mirror cancelled a deal to sell eight of its local newspapers to Johnston Press, after the Competition Commission ruled that the sale of four of the titles would give Johnston monopolies on advertising in the regions they were published in.

Although regional newspaper publishing is viewed as less glamorous than national newspapers, regional advertising has withstood the advertising downturn far better than national newspapers.
