Daily Mail buys Irish tabloid for £7.4m

LONDON - Daily Mail & General Trust has paid Scottish Radio Holdings £7.4m for its Irish tabloid newspaper Ireland on Sunday.

The acquisition, which has already received regulatory approval, marks the first foray of DMGT's Associated Newspapers into Ireland.

Ireland on Sunday has a circulation of more than 53,000 and is distributed mainly in the Republic of Ireland, with some sales in Northern Ireland. The Dublin-based newspaper employs 40 staff and incurred operating losses of £500,000 for the six-month period to March 31.

Associated Newspapers publishes the The Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and The Evening Standard. DMGT also owns Northcliffe Newspapers, the regional newspaper publisher, and it has interests in radio and television.
