The move was announced by chief executive Robert Iger who admitted media companies needed to find ways to innovate digitally and adapt to changes in consumer viewing habits.
Iger said Disney was investigating the possibility of a subscription service where consumers could access its library online or by mail.
The fight against piracy is a prime motivator for such a move. Iger said the ability to make content available both cheaply and quickly maybe the best defence against the pirates in terms of securing revenue.
The announcement came after shares in DVD and video rental chain Blockbuster plunged 77% and the company announced plans to restructure its $615m debt (£438m).
Blockbuster has struggled to compete against online rivals such as Netflix, which delivers movies on demand online.
In January the chain announced a deal with to offer a similar service.
