The drama about the lives of suburban housewives is to be dubbed into Mandarin and shown as three back-to-back episodes a night on the state-run CCTV8 television channel, according to a an announcement by Walt Disney, which broadcasts the show in the US on its ABC network.
The airing of the steamy show is seen as a major cultural departure for the Chinese government, which is known to shy away from allowing sexually and politically sensitive programming.
Other unlikely exports have included Richard Nixon, who in 1972 became the first US president to visit China, and in the 1980s Wham! were the first mainstream UK pop music act to perform live in the country.
This latest development for 'Desperate Housewives' adds to an already successful year in which it has been taken on by more than 200 territories and was also the top-ranked show in Singapore, where three quarters of the population are of Chinese origin.
