Channel 4 shines the light on Tony Blair the rock star

LONDON - Fresh from the launch of More4 with David Blunkett drama 'A Very Social Secretary', Channel 4 is to air a comedy documentary about Prime Minister Tony Blair's attempt to become a rock star in his Oxford University days.

'Tony Blair Rock Star' is a one-hour comedy, which sheds the light on Blair when he was the lead singer of Oxford band 'Ugly Rumours' in the 1960s.

The comedy documentary draws on interviews with people in the band and groupies, and aims to show Blair in a totally new light as a spandex-clad rock phenomenon.

Channel 4 also unveiled an impressive comedy and entertainment line-up for Friday nights, consisting of the latest hit sitcom taking the US by storm 'My Name is Earl', starring 'Mall Rats', 'Chasing Amy' and 'Almost Famous' actor Jason Lee.

Lee plays petty crook Earl who, after winning a minor lottery, has an epiphany and vows to cleanse his karma by righting all the wrongs from his past. Ethan Suplee, who also appeared in 'Mall Rats' as well as 'Cold Mountain', stars as Earl's hapless brother.

The Wall Street Journal has dubbed the series currently screening on US network NBC as "a Slam Dunk Critical Hit". The show was the number one comedy and number one new series with adults aged 18-49 last week in the US, securing 9.3m viewers.

Topical panel gameshow '8 Out of 10 Cats' is back for a second series with comedian Jimmy Carr hosting the series alongside team captains Sean Lock and Dave Spikey. 'The Friday Night Project' is also back with a new line-up headed by comedians Justin Lee Collins and Alan Carr.

Next up is the second series of 'Rock School', the music reality show with a difference. Kiss frontman Gene Simmons heads to a co-ed comprehensive, where The Darkness lead singer Justin Hawkins went to school, to select and mentor a group of kids to become part of a rock band.

New comedy sitcom 'The IT Crowd' from the 'Father Ted' and 'Black Books' creator Graham Linehan centres on the lives of Roy, Moss and Jen who run an IT department in a glamorous office and have to contend with working in the basement and being dismissed by their colleagues as geeks.

As always, Channel 4 courts controversy with its documentary line-up, including a three part series 'What to Do with Mum and Dad', putting the issue of an ageing population on the national agenda.

'How to Get Divorced without F***ing Up Your Kids' will raise a few eyebrows as Texan divorce coach Christina McGhee meets three UK families going through a divorce and helps the parents to guide their children through the emotional time.

Other popular returning dramas include 'The Comic Strip Presents...' , 'Shameless', 'Desperate Housewives', 'Green Wing', 'Peep Show' and the final series of 'No Angels.'

And of course, Channel 4's mainstay 'Celebrity Big Brother' will be back in January.
