Daily Mail makes strong ABCe debut with 11.9m users

LONDON - Official ABC Electronic figures have confirmed that the Daily Mail's online network received 11.9m unique users for the month of July, although fewer than a quarter of these were from the UK.

This strong debut ABCe figure from the Daily Mail online network, which covers and , puts it in second place behind Guardian Unlimited as the most popular newspaper website. The number of page impressions it counted totalled 82m.

The Associated-owned network also revealed its figures for unique users from the UK only, which totalled 2.66m for the month, meaning 9.2m users came from other parts of the globe.

The Daily Mail plans to post this separate UK figure each month for the benefit of advertisers.

Martin Clarke, editorial director of the Mail online, said the company is working on a total redesign of the site at the moment, but it is uncertain when it will be relaunched.

He said: "These figures establish MailOnline as a leading player in the digital world and show how a market-leading newspaper can transfer its success online without turning its existing publishing operation upside down."

The Guardian Unlimited network, covering and observer.co.uk, held onto its commanding position, receiving 16.1m unique users in July, a jump of around 1.5m from the month before. Its page impressions totalled 157m, while its unique users listed from the UK only totalled 5.9m or 37% of unique users in total.

The Guardian has been relaunching parts of the site over the past few months, with the latest redesign unveiled earlier this week on its job site.

Times Online, which includes and , held onto its lead over fellow News International network Sun Online, recording 10.5m unique users for the month. This is a jump of just over 1m unique users from the month before. Its page impressions totalled 72m.

The Sun Online network, which covers , and , received 9.4m, a slight increase of around 400,000 unique users from the month before. It leads the field in page impressions with 214m.

rounded up the pack, posting 9m unique users in July, almost a 2m jump on its unique users figures from June. It narrowly beat Times Online with 78m page impressions.

Earlier this month, The Independent newspaper became the final broadsheet to sign up to ABC electronic and its first audited figures will be released later this year.
