Aslet will take the role of editor-at-large after 13 years as editor-in-chief of Country Life and his entire working career of 28 years at the title. He first joined as a reporter in 1978 before being appointed architectural editor then editor-at-large in in 1993.
During his time as editor-in-chief, Aslet has overseen the magazine's centenary in 1997, launched the Country Life and was named editor of the year by the British Society of Magazine Editors.
Aslet said: "Editing Country Life is the best job in journalism and I have enjoyed every minute of doing it. However, after 13 years, I find that my first love -- writing -- is once again making eyes at me."
At the same time, IPC announced it has appointed Hedges as editor-in-chief of Country Life. Hedges will still be responsible for the company's country, equestrian and shooting titles.
Both appointments come into effect on March 13.
Separately, IPC has appointed Country Life and Equestrian Group publishing director Fiona Dent to the same role for design magazine Wallpaper.
