Closure of BBC Jam sees 200 jobs go

LONDON – The closure of the BBC's online interactive learning service for 5- to 16-year-olds will cost as many as 200 jobs.

Closure of BBC Jam sees 200 jobs go
Liz Cleaver, BBC controller of BBC Learning confirmed that the jobs would go as a result of the suspension of the service on March 20, following a decision by the BBC Trust.

The closure followed the BBC Trust's request to BBC management to close down activity on BBC Jam as soon as possible, except where it was necessary to prepare a fresh proposition to deliver learning to children.

Many of the 200 people working in BBC Jam teams in London, Glasgow, Cardiff and Belfast have already left and others may be redeployed. The net loss of jobs is expected to be around 31 of which 25 are in London.

The closure has ushered in a reorganisation of the BBC's Formal Learning department, so that it reflects BBC Vision's wider multi-platform commissioning structure. This will result in the creation of 13 new posts.
