BBC drops magazine promotions after complaints

The BBC is to stop broadcasting promotions for two of its magazines, Eve and Star, after rival publisher IPC Media complained that it felt the public service broadcaster was acting in breach of guidelines.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - The BBC is to stop broadcasting promotions for two of its magazines, Eve and Star, after rival publisher IPC Media complained that it felt the public service broadcaster was acting in breach of guidelines.

The woman’s magazine Eve, published by the BBC’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide, was advertised after BBC2 science programme Brain Story. The BBC’s teenage publication Star was promoted after Live & Kicking and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

The action to ban the promotions was taken by the BBC Governors’ fair trading compliance committee.

The committee has also stipulated that a slot on the broadcaster’s Saturday morning show Live & Kicking, also called Star, is to be renamed to avoid confusion among viewers who might think the show and magazine are linked.
