Closer retakes top spot as celebrity weeklies lose steam

LONDON - Emap's Closer and Heat have knocked Northern & Shell's OK! Magazine off the top spot in a contracting celebrity weeklies sector, according to ABC figures for January-June 2007.

The top five magazines all experienced circulation declines over the previous period, bringing an end to a long period of sustained growth for the sector.

Closer returned to the top spot with a circulation of 570,239 copies, down 7.1% on the second half of 2006 and down 3.4% year on year

Heat is close behind with 558,365, down 6.7% period on period and down 3.7% on the year.

OK! Magazine suffered a significant decline, falling 10.7% over six months to 557,014, but was up 1.7% over a year.

IPC's Now went below half-a-million copies after an 8.5% fall, to 494,229, over six months and by the same amount over a year.

New!, published by Northern & Shell, is on 442,003, down 3.3% period on period and down 3.7% year on year.

Next in the table were two of three titles that registered a six-monthly rise. Hello! magazine climbed 1.7% over six months to 419,814 and is up 4% over a year. ACP-Natmags' Reveal rose 0.5% over six months to 347,257 and is up 1.5% over a year.

Northern & Shell's Star continues to lag with 254,282 copies, down 5.7% over six months and down 5.4% over a year.

Lastly, Emap's recent launch First was another riser, but is still struggling. It shifted 106,961 copies, up 6.5% from its debut figure last period of 100,439. At its launch last May, Emap was aiming for 150,000 copies an issue after 12 months.
