Charities feel the heat as recession intensifies

LONDON - Charities are increasingly suffering as a result of the economic downturn.

More than half of charities (52%) were feeling the effects of the recession in February, according to the Charities Commission's latest survey. This compares with 38% when the survey was carried out in September. About a third of charities admitted they were suffering a decline in income as a result of the financial crisis.

Charities with an annual income of between £100,000 and £1m have been worst hit, according to The Economic Survey of Charities. However, overall, only a quarter of charities said the impact had been ‘significant' or ‘very significant' and a third of charities were already taking steps to fight the effects of the downturn.

For charities such as Oxfam and Shelter, part of this response has involved job cuts. The NSPCC, meanwhile, has temporarily suspended the print version of its Your Family magazine.
