Developed by Omniture, the tool measures the popularity and usage of Facebook apps and is designed to give marketers insight into the correlation between Facebook apps and site traffic.

Many brands have developed Facebook apps which range from simple graphics which users post on their walls to complex multiplayer games which spread around the site as users get their contacts involved.

Measurement of Facebook apps has previously relied on statistics from Facebook such as user downloads and click through rates to the brand's website.

Ominture's new tool will give brands deeper information on the role their apps play in their wider digital marketing strategy, the company said.

Last year Channel 4 created a Big Brother 9 app, which allowed users to review, rate and share video content as it battled falling ratings for the reality show.
