Capital One drops Indian call centre over credit offers

LONDON - Capital One has cancelled a deal with India's largest call centre after it emerged that Indian workers had misled the US credit company's customers with unauthorised offers.

In a routine inspection Wipro Spectramind, the Indian technology company, discovered the offers and disclosed the evidence to Capital One, which decided not to renew its telemarketing contract with the New Delhi-based call centre.

The move comes as the sector faces a tide of political backlash over the outsourcing of call centre work overseas. In the US politicians in Washington are expected to debate legislation that could force call centre workers to disclose their location to customers.

US bank Lehman Brothers and computer manufacturer Dell have brought back services such as helpdesks after consumers complained about poor service but reports suggest that the Capital One case is the first where a contract has been torn up because of call centre workers deliberately trying to mislead customers.
