CAFOD unveils World Sandwich Day with campaign

LONDON – CAFOD, the Catholic aid agency, is launching a multimedia campaign aimed at Catholics to promote World Sandwich Day, asking people to donate their lunch money to end world hunger.

Direct marketing agency DMS has created the campaign, comprising a responsive radio ad, inserts in the local press, a door-drop and a handout to be given out by people wearing sandwich boards.

The fundraising drive begins this week, the highlight being World Sandwich Day on Friday October 1, when CAFOD will ask people to donate their lunch money to the cause.

The cities of Liverpool and Chester have been chosen for the launch, due to their high concentration of Catholics. Some of the area's famous faces, such as actor Joe McGann, who has recorded the radio ad, and members of the 'Hollyoaks' cast, have also been involved in the campaign.

Tanya Hornsey, senior account manager at DMS, said: "We have created a fully integrated campaign that we hope will get a serious message across in a colourful and humorous way. It will be great to see all of the volunteers walking around Liverpool city centre wearing sandwich boards."

CAFOD was born more than 40 years ago when volunteer members of the National Board of Catholic Women organised the first Family Fast Day. Parishes across the country raised thousands of pounds for mothers and babies in the Caribbean island of Dominica by fasting and donating the money they saved.
