C5 increases advertising revenue share

LONDON - Channel 5 has increased its audience share to 6% and its share of TV advertising revenues to 6.8%, following an overhaul of its schedule which saw it poach Home and Away from ITV.

The channel's audience share is said to be averaging at around 6.2%, after receiving a £6m cash injection from shareholders RTL and United Business Media in April, when audience share had stalled at around 5.5%.

Its share of TV adspend is just over £14m out of a £200m-a-year market.

More recently, the channel received a £3m boost to its budget, and newsreader Kirsty Young, who defected to ITV, has returned to the station to present the news. Young became famous when she first appeared on TV screens standing up while reading the news. This style has since been emulated by Channel 4 and BBC newsreaders.
