C4 hails 'Big Brother 4' as success as Cameron wins

LONDON – As fish trader Cameron scooped the £70,000 'Big Brother' prize Channel 4 hailed the fourth series a success despite audience figures being down on last year.

The Orkney Islander beat Ray in the final vote on Friday as more than 4.3m votes were cast bringing the total number of votes for the fourth series to nearly 12m.

Cameron, who at 32-years old was the oldest of the Big Brother contestants this year, picked up 57.5% of the votes compared to Ray’s 42%.

At a press conference after exiting the house Cameron told the media of his friendship with fellow housemate Steph, however, he ruled out any romance.

"She's supposed to be coming to Orkney, but I can't see any romantic involvement between me and Steph." He also went on to confirm what he had hinted at while in the house that he was indeed a virgin.

Ahead of the final vote he was the bookies' favourite to win the £70,000 in prize money. Fifth housemate Jon was exempt from the prize because he was evicted and then rejoined the house to spice things up in a public vote when Lisa was evicted two weeks ago.

The number of votes cast over the series has risen steadily, with Nush, last week's evictee , receiving the most and becoming the first housemate to pass the 1m mark.

The biggest number of votes received for one show prior to the final was when Lisa was voted out and Jon was voted back in. The total number cast for that show exceeded 2m.

'Big Brother 4' has drawn as much as a 43% share of the lucrative 16- to 34-year-old audience, and a 44% share of ABC1 adults for Channel 4.

Its average audience is 4.4m, a 22% share, while the show in which Jon was voted back in drew 6.3m viewers, a 35% share.

Julian Bellamy, head of factual entertainment at Channel 4, said: "Every weekday for the last nine weeks, 'Big Brother' has more than doubled the channel's audience at 10pm. With audiences for the fourth series of 'Big Brother' outperforming both series one and two, the public's appetite for reality TV shows, and for the big brother of them all, seems as great as ever."

The first show in the new series of 'Big Brother' saw viewing figures hit a record 8m at the programme's highest point on Friday night, Channel 4's biggest audience so far this year.

Last year's final, won by Kate Lawler who went on to become a presenter on Channel 4's breakfast show 'RI:SE', was watched by an estimated 10m viewers.

'Big Brother' mania continues, as E4 will be showing the US series, which has caused a lot of excitement as ex-partners have been locked up in the house together.

The US show has also had its first bonk, which will be shown in some form on E4.
