Dailymotion, a rival to Google's YouTube, was established in France and has expanded to the US, claiming more than 32 million unique users around the globe.

Burns' brief at Dailymotion will involve striking commercial deals in the UK, building an in-house sales team and increasing traffic to the site.

Burns left Google in 2007, having been the search behemoth's first employee outside the US.
Since then, she has had several roles in the online sector, including head of search at ad network AdLink, as well as working with search firm SearchRev and digital media consultancy Signature.

Burns' previous posting, as a consultant to affiliate network Buy.at, has ended following the firm's sale last month to Time-Warner-owned AOL.
