Valentine takes up the post on June 15 and will remain in the role on an acting basis.
He will be based in Uxbridge, Middlesex and will report to Andre Lacroix, president of Burger King International, and Christopher Clouser, the company's chief global marketing officer and executive vice-president.
Clouser said: "John is an outstanding marketer and will be a valued contributor to our marketing strategy in the UK. We are building momentum in the US and we believe we will be equally successful in relaunching the Burger King brand in the UK."
Valentine was a founding partner of VML, now owned by WPP, nearly 10 years ago. He has worked in advertising for 33 years and has spent his career building brands and products including Hallmark Greeting Cards, Pizza Hut, H&R Block Financial Services, Northwest Airlines and Sprint Telecom.
