British forces get new news and community website

LONDON - As the UK's military build-up in the Gulf continues, a new military website, MoD Oracle, has been launched to serve past and present members of the British armed forces around the world.

Created by Network Services International, the site provides the latest military news from the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Key features of the site, located at , include a live military news feed capturing UK forces-relevant news from around the world. Users of the site are able to register to receive news stories direct to their desktop.

The military search engine facility combines MoD Oracle, MoD websites, Nato, the UN and the wider internet. The site has its own forum area, The Wall, and an area dedicated to reunions where users can submit details including date, time, location and how to get in touch for further information.

Crispin Blunt, a former Cavalry officer and MP for Reigate and Banstead, said: "MoD Oracle provides a great service to everyone interested in the Armed Forces, particularly all those who are serving or who have served."

The MoD Oracle site has been created independently of the UK Ministry of Defence, although NSI liased closely with the department and other groups and is working alongside each of the three services.

Jeremy Lillies, the head of public affairs for the Royal British Legion, said: "MoD Oracle has got a bit of everything, the live news-feed stands out as being quite attractive."

The site sells a certain amount of space on its databases to companies wishing to sell products and services in different spheres to the military generally or service persons individually. This is coupled with a small amount of more discreet banner space.

Network Services International is also behind the MoD Reunited site, which puts former service personnel back in touch.
