The service, provided by Mobile OnAir, will allow its customers to access the internet and send emails from laptops fitted with GSM data cards. BA is the first UK airline to announce the introduction of a live communications service on transatlantic flights.

It may extend the service to include voice calls depending on customer demand and feedback.

At the beginning of this month Andrew Crawley was appointed BA's sales and marketing director. He took over from its former head of marketing communications Katherine Whitton, who was one of its 450 senior managers that took voluntary redundancy.
