She is one of 450 senior managers to have taken voluntary redundancy as the airline cuts costs following the difficult opening of Heathrow's Terminal 5 earlier this year. She will leave on 31 December, but has yet to secure another role.
Whitton joined the flag-carrier from American Express in May 2007, replacing Jayne O'Brien. Sources close to BA claim one reason for her departure was the lack of opportunities to further her career at the airline. BA's management are believed to be seeking an external candidate to replace former head of marketing and distribution Tiffany Hall, who left in June.
Whitton oversaw the appointment of OgilvyOne to BA's global direct marketing account, and the launch of the 'Terminal 5 is working' campaign in August.
Abigail Comber, formerly Whitton's deputy, is now the most senior marketer at BA. She will lead its marketing communications division in an interim role. Ian Romanis has been appointed temporary head of commercial insight with a brief spanning partnership marketing and loyalty.
David Murdin, BA's general manager of brand and customer experience, and Stuart Beamish, head of its global loyalty programme, have also taken voluntary redundancy.
Separately, BA will roll out a press, outdoor, radio and digital drive intended to promote leisure breaks.
