British Airways deals with fire drama

A British Airways plane caught fire at Las Vegas airport yesterday, forcing the evacuation of 172 people on board on emergency slides.

The Boeing 777-200 plane was preparing for take-off when its left engine caught fire. An of what it was like to be on board the plane has been written by Guardian journalist Jacob Steinberg.

Airport officials said 13 people were taken to hospital, most of them with injuries sustained while sliding down inflatable chutes during the evacuation.

Instagram widers ad offer

Instagram, the photo-sharing app owned by Facebook, is opening the platform to all advertisers by the end of the month.

Businesses of all sizes will be able to advertise on Instagram from today and the ads will be available in more than 30 new markets such as Italy, Spain, Mexico, India and South Korea.

It has also launched new features for the app including a landscape format for images and videos. Advertisers will also be able to make use of 30 seconds for videos instead of the 15 seconds currently available.

Microsoft continues court battle over emails

Microsoft is returning to court to continue its fight against the US government’s demand that it hand over emails stored at an Irish data centre.  

The messages involved are alleged to contain details of narcotics sales.

The stand-off is being viewed as a test case that will determine the extent of the US government’s powers over tech companies that offer cloud-based services.
