The viral ad, created by Australian independent ad agency Belgiovane Williams Mackay, shows Branson sipping Champagne with his arms around two naked women in a spa before descending into science fiction farce.
During the spot, he is seen refusing to take an angry call from the boss of a fictional rival firm Vargon, who turns out to be an intergalactic warlord of the Emperor Ming variety. Branson tells one of the women to tell the rival he's too busy.
His angry rival then zaps Branson with a death ray, reducing the billionaire to dust. It is only then that we see why he was so busy, as a third naked women bobs up from beneath the bubbles looking confused.
Branson is no stranger to controversy when launching new products, with previous stunts including dressing up in drag for the launch of Virgin Brides.
A spokesman for Virgin Money confirmed that the ad was only being targeted at the Australian market.
There are plans to launch a similar mortgage service in the UK, but it is unlikely that the same viral campaign will be used for the launch.
Branson's latest stunt has already raised eyebrows in Australia with the Sydney Morning Herald calling it "semi-pornographic".
However, in a news article the paper also praised Branson saying: "Sir Richard is unique and he, more than anyone else, knows how to drum up the publicity."
