Brand Manager of the Week

Maria Bailey, group marketing manager, Northcliffe Media DMGT

Describe yourself in three words.
Enjoy the challenge.

How would you define marketing?
It’s at the heart of the business – covering everything from company culture and positioning to external advert-ising and promotion. It’s the process by which a company decides what it will sell, to whom, when and how, and then does it.

What would you be if you weren’t a brand manager?
A deck chair attendant at Bondi beach.

What advice would you give someone starting their marketing career today?
Consume everything online, be part of the conversation and have an opinion.

What attracted you to your current job?
After three years working in magazine publishing in Sydney I started to miss the London buzz over the sunshine, and I was keen to expand my digital experience within a fast-paced media organisation.

Who is your dream boss?
Someone inspirational and with conviction - or Simon Cowell, he’s arrogant, but knows what he’s talking about, and I always agree with him.

If you weren’t you, who would you be?
Angelina Jolie – of course, for the charity work, not the hot man.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Creating firsts, like the new Northcliffe Media website, launching new channels on the ‘thisis’ sites, supporting Jobsite’s £10m ad campaign.

What is your media diet?
A selection of newsfeeds from our ‘thisis’ network, The Guardian, Revolution, the marketing trade press, digg, wired and glam.com.

If you were a brand, what would you be?
Wispa. Absence makes the heart grow stronger; I’d just keep re-appearing and be more popular than the last time.

Which campaign do you wish you had commissioned?
Comparethemarket, a great blend of traditional, social and viral marketing for the mass market.

If you could get tickets to any event, what would it be?
The US Presidential inaugurat-ion in January would have been a once-in-a-lifetime ticket.
