Brand manager of the week: Simon Day, Brand manager, unearthed

Describe yourself in three words - Positive. Quietly rebellious.

- What would you be if you weren't a brand manager?

I'd be running a little travel company. Somewhere obscure.

- What advice would you give someone starting their marketing career today?

Don't get it all out of a textbook. The things of which you will be most proud are the things you came up with yourself.

- What is your favourite-ever marketing campaign?

The Famous Grouse - just the grouse and a white background. I remember one entitled 'Mellow' where the grouse did a little eyebrow raise. Loved the simplicity.

- What attracted you to your present job?

An entrepreneurial environment. By that, I essentially mean the freedom to do what I want.

- What hobbies do you have?

Gliding, travelling, anything outdoors.

- If you weren't you, who would you be?

Alastair Humphreys in his cycling-around-the-world days. The freedom of the open road.

- What was your first job?

Selling shoes. I lived near a shoe-dominated town.

- If you were a brand, what would you be and why?

BBC - interested in everything.

- What makes you angry?

People shooting down ideas without having any of their own.

- What's your favourite holiday destination?

Mainland Greece. Up in the mountains somewhere.

- What's your favourite pub?

The Barton Inn, back home in Somerset. There was a whole family Irish-dancing in there at some late hour of the night the last time I went.

- If you had three wishes, what would they be?

For David Attenborough to be immortal. I think that would be enough, I don't want to be greedy.
