BR Video: Public gives cold shoulder to early Christmas retailing

LONDON - Retailers should wait until late October or November before rolling out their Christmas ranges, according to members of the public interviewed in the latest BR video who feel that launching them too early "puts people off" and is in "bad taste" given the current economic climate.

Harrods launched its Christmas store in August and supermarkets such as have been getting in on the act this month, selling festive products in their stores.

The majority of those people questioned in the Brand Republic video felt that it was too soon and thought it was in "bad taste", particularly amid the recession.

One man said: "I think people get fed up nowadays when retailers jump on the Christmas bandwagon when you feel that summer isn't even over.

"It annoys me when I start to see Christmas ranges in stores in September."

A woman said: "December time is Christmas. That's when you get in the mood for it. Why would you want stuff to be put out in August? It puts me off."

Another man said: "It depends, if I like the product I'm going to buy it anyway. But when I see toy adverts and things like that I think 'Guys you're going too early and I don't want you to wind my kids up'."

Other interviewees felt that it was nice to see the merchandise out early because it helped them to prepare and plan.

One person said: "It doesn't put me off but it does make you realise 'Oh no, I need to get ready'."

Those questioned felt that late October or early November was a good time for retailers to start stocking Christmas products and that any sooner was "too pushy".

One lady said: "Well I think it's quite worrying when they don't have summer things in the shop when it's summer and they've just got Christmas stuff in summer. That worries me slightly because you can never get what you need, when you need it."

Another said: "I think especially now with the economic climate people are going to shop later anyway."
