BlackBerry PlayBook's US price and onsale date revealed

Research in Motion (Rim), the BlackBerry manufacturer, is now taking orders for its iPad rival, PlayBook, via Best Buy and has confirmed the tablet will hit US stores on 19 April.

The has a retail price of $499 (£307) for a 16GB model, $599 for a 32GB model and $699 for 64GB model.

Rim has chosen not to undercut Apple but the PlayBook is still cheaper than some tablets.

An on-sale date for the UK launch and its pricing details have not yet been confirmed by Rim, but the company says the PlayBook will be available in the second quarter of 2011. Its US price suggests it will retail in the UK broadly inline with the iPad.

Craig McLennan, regional managing director at Research In Motion North America, said: "Previews of the BlackBerry PlayBook have generated tremendous excitement and we know that customers are eager to get their hands on one."

According to Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple, the iPad 2 is experiencing "amazing demand" since it launched in the US last month.

The , with a recommended retail price of £399, including VAT, for the 16GB model and £659 for the 64GB model with 3G.
