The 13th contestant will be picked for doing something that creates "special attention". This could be anything from picking the best bed or something they say or do.
'Big Brother', which looks set to reprise last year's evil role, will then make the housemate do a week of punishing chores alongside early morning wake-up calls to see if they crack under the pressure.
'Big Brother' usually has 12 contestants but with a longer show, running for 100 days this outing, Channel 4 has opted to rope in an unlucky 13th player.
Sharon Powers, executive producer on the show, said: "The 13th housemate will be the unluckiest ever. How that transpires is a surprise, but it will be exciting to watch."
The 13th contesant will not, however, be the only one to suffer. With the house being the smallest to date, the others will suffer in close proximity as the sixth series gets under way on Friday.
The newly built house has also been designed to give the housemates as little privacy as possible, with a glass wall separating the kitchen from the bedroom and the living room being a glass box in the garden.
Further pain will be extracted from the washing set-up. This year there will be no dedicated bathroom, with 'Big Brother' providing only two toilets and putting all the showers and sinks outdoors.
If that wasn't enough, heat-seeking cameras will be installed in the bedroom to capture the late-night antics of any of the 13 housemates.
"If they decide to play any sexy games such as 'Follow the Van' we'll be able to see what they're up to," Phil Edgar Jones, Channel 4 head of factual entertainment, said.
