The calculations show the venues injected £65m worth of business tourism into the local economy during the 2008/2009 financial year – £8m less than the £73m generated in 2007/2008.

The overall economic benefit of Bournemouth's business tourism was also hit, dropping £12.6m, from £127.6m in 2007/2008 to £115m in 2008/2009.

"It is important to put our figures into perspective; it's a small drop, which when you look at the economy is by no means worrying," said BIC head of conferences, exhibitions and events Clive Tyers.

"Although they represent a fall in the amount of business tourism we attracted compared with the previous financial year, this was a result of external factors.

"As the green shoots start to appear, we expect these figures to return to the level they were and higher."
