Beckham takes on gladiator role in new Pepsi campaign

LONDON - David Beckham moves from the American west to the amphitheatres of ancient Rome as he takes on the role of a gladiator in his latest big-budget television advertising outing for Pepsi.

It follows his appearance in the last Pepsi ad with fellow footballers Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Juan Veron in which he had a showdown with players from Real Madrid -- the team to which he is now signed.

According to reports in today's Sun, Beckham's new ad appearance will see him starring in an ancient football game with new teammates, Ronaldo, Raul and Roberto Carlos. However, the identity of the team they play against has not been revealed, and Pepsi is not commenting on the ad.

Pictures show Beckham appearing in a toga with leather armour, and his name blazoned on his back. Pepsi retains Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO to work on its UK advertising.

The chances of Pepsi successfully shooting the commercial without any pictures being leaked to the press are almost nil. A legion of British journalists have followed his every move since he signed a 拢25m contract to join Real Madrid last month, a deal that was welcomed by three of his major sponsors: Pepsi, from whom he earns an estimated 拢2m a year; Adidas; and Vodafone. He has starred in TV ads for all three brands.

The latest spot is being shot in a square in Medinaceli, which is 120 miles from Madrid. Reports say that the ad will end with a quirky twist. Its style is based on gladiatorial combat -- no doubt influenced by Ridley Scott's 2000 blockbuster Gladiator, starring Russell Crowe.
