The competition was named America's Favourite Ad Slogan and was selected from around 30 entries.
The winning slogan was chosen by consumers through an online vote hosted by Yahoo! as part of Advertising Week. At the same time, two advertising mascots unknown to most Europeans, Juan Valdez of the National Federation of Coffee Growers of Columbia, and Geico Gecko, who represents the insurance company Geico, were voted the favourites by the US public. Valdez was created by DDB in 1959, which Geico Gecko first appeared in 1999.
The icons were among those featured in a parade of America's favourite advertising mascots through Manhattan. Other attendees included last year's winner Tony the Tiger, along with Snap, Crackle and Pop and the California Raisin.
The winning taglines and icons will be inducted into the Madison Avenue Advertising 'Walk of Fame' in New York City.
David Lubars, chairman and chief creative officer of BBDO New York, the agency behind the General Electric slogan, said: "When advertising engages the public, you have the potential to make magic, and maybe even watch your message become part of popular culture."
Advertising Week runs from September 26-30 and includes keynote speeches and panels, public exhibitions, conferences and award shows and is supported by 33 major advertising and media trade groups.
