BBC.co.uk's internet dominance threatened by YouTube

LONDON - YouTube is poised to overtake BBC.co.uk in terms of the number of UK web visits, according to web measurement firm Hitwise.

The user-generated video site currently falls behind the BBC.co.uk, but is catching up fast and will overtake the BBC in a matter of weeks should its popularity continue to grow.

Last week, the BBC ranked 14th among all categories of websites, accounting for 0.82% of all internet visits. YouTube ranked 25th, with a 0.81% share.

In the UK, BBC.co.uk is the number one website in Hitwise's entertainment category. YouTube is in second position.

With its mere 1.6% lead on YouTube, the BBC is fast losing ground. Three months ago, it had a 37% lead and six months ago was 131% ahead.
