Over half-a-million people listened to the live commentary on 'Test Match Special' through the Five Live, Radio 4 and sport websites, the corporation said.
The entire cricket series also helped to boost the BBC's cricket website with three times as many people visiting the site in a month compared with last year.
Ben Gallop, BBC Sport Interactive editor, said: "What's really taken us by surprise has been the whole new audience who have been introduced to cricket this summer.
"The traffic levels to the BBC Sport website have been unprecedented and fans have been contacting us from around the world to tell us the lengths they have to go to follow the action."
Channel 4 picked up its highest audience share of the year on Monday as 7.4m tuned in to see England's historic Ashes victory over Australia at the Oval to bring the trophy home after 18 years.
Live terrestrial cricket coverage brought a peak of 7.4m viewers to Channel 4. Viewing figures grew steadily throughout the day, hitting 6.2m at 5pm and not dropping below 6m until 6.45pm.
The record viewing figures and furore surrounding the sport has renewed calls for live cricket matches to remain on terrestrial television.
However, culture, media and sport secretary Tessa Jowell has publicly said she will not intervene in the £220m Sky deal, which will see live cricket to move to the satellite broadcaster from 2006 to 2009.
