BBC reveal two to share Sharman's head of CBBC role

LONDON – The BBC has appointed two figures to replace Alison Sharman as head of its newly renamed BBC Children's division.

Richard Deverell, BBC Children's chief operating officer, is taking on the role of controller of the department while Anne Gilchrist, CBBC executive editor, has been promoted to the newly created role of creative director.

Deverell, who has been acting controller of children's since Sharman defected to ITV last year to take up the post of director of factual and daytime, will assume overall control and Gilchrist will deputise.

Before joining BBC Children's, Deverell was head of BBC News Interactive and spent 10 years at BBC News.

Gilchrist, executive editor independents and events in the department since 2005, spent three years as head of entertainment for CBBC.

Previously, she was channel executive for BBC One, working closely with former BBC One controller Lorraine Heggessey throughout the relaunch of the channel.

Deverell and Gilchrist will take up their new posts immediately.

Alan Yentob, BBC creative director, said: "These two key appointments are designed to put creative renewal and a visionary strategy at the heart of our offer to children, across all services and media.

"BBC Children's audiences are already living in the digital future and everything we make for them needs to set a standard for innovation and excellence."

Deverell said: "I feel very proud to be given the opportunity to lead Children's: together we have a wonderful opportunity to inspire a new generation of children with outstanding, innovative and absorbing programmes and services."

Gilchrist added: "For me, this is the best job in children's broadcasting and I'm enormously excited about working with Richard and with in-house and indie talent to realise a new creative vision for CBBC."
