BBC One tops ratings with 7.3m as 'Silent Witness' returns

LONDON - BBC One regained the upper hand in peaktime last night with 'Silent Witness' trouncing ITV1's 'The Bill' by 3.1 million viewers, according to unofficial overnight figures.

It appears 'Silent Witness' is likely to dominate Thursday nights over its 10-part run, after 26.7% of the audience tuned in for the first in the forensic pathologist series.

'The Bill' took second place with 4.2 million viewers and a 15.3% share, with Channel 4 fairly close behind on 3.1 million viewers for 'Gordon Ramsay's F Word'.

Channel 4's figures, which include the contribution from Channel 4+1, give it a share of 12.6%.

'Celebrity Big Brother' at 10pm-11.15pm managed a 3.1 million audience and a 19.8% share.

Five offered Steven Seagal- movie 'The Belly of the Beast' and was rewarded with 1.1 million viewers and a 4.4% share between 9pm and 10.45pm.

It was bested by BBC Two, which pulled in 1.5 million for 'History of Now: The Story of the Noughties', enough for a 5.4% share at 9pm-10pm.
