BBC One tops Five with Woolworths documentary

LONDON - BBC One's Woolworths documentary led the ratings with 4.7m viewers while Five's second helping of US crime drama 'The Mentalist' drew 3.2m last night, according to unofficial overnight figures.

'How Woolies Became Wellies: One Woman's Fight for the High Street' on BBC One won the primetime slot last night, drawing 4.7m viewers and a 22% audience share between 9pm-10pm.

The documentary followed Claire Robertson, former manager of Woolworths' Dorchester branch, who decided to resurrect the shop under the new brand Wellworths. She hired all her former employees, many of whom had devoted over 30 years to the high-street chain before it went out of business in January.

Five's primetime offering, US crime drama 'The Mentalist', dropped 400,000 viewers from its debut audience of 3.6m last week.

But it earned Five a 14.5% share and helped it beat ITV1, which aired the second instalment of 'The Truth About Eternal Youth'.

ITV's three-part series is hosted by former pop star turned TV presenter Coleen Nolan, who looks at the options available to help people look younger. It was watched by 2.5m, 11% of the 9pm-10pm audience.

BBC Two also ran with a documentary 'The Children of Helen House Revisited', which took a heart-wrenching look at the Helen House children's hospice in Oxford. The documentary, which was shot in 2005, managed to draw 1.1m and a 5% audience.

A topical think-piece from Channel 4's 'Cutting Edge' documentary series, 'Would You Save a Stranger?' delved into the risks and rewards of the good Samaritan dilemma, saying that one in three UK residents wouldn't intervene to help someone who was being attacked.

The documentary focused on two stories, one of Howard and Geraldine, who saved a life by intervening when they saw a man being savagely beaten in a London street at night.

The other side of the coin told the story of Liam, who was killed while trying to stop a boy being robbed of his mobile phone.

'Would You Save a Stranger?' pulled in 1.4m viewers and a 6% audience share. A further 200,000 viewers tuned in on Channel 4+1 at 10pm.

Channel 4 was buoyed later in the evening with the final instalment of 'The Sex Education Show vs Pornography' programme, which aired throughout the week at 9pm until switching to the later 10pm-11pm slot last night. It managed a 9.6% share as 1.6m tuned in, with an additional 200,000 viewers on Channel 4+1 at 11pm.

The broadcaster's digital channel E4 scored a big audience for the start of the second series of 'The Inbetweeners'. The teenage-suburbanite comedy drew 1.2m and a 6% share of the 10-10.30pm audience.
