The corporation says that 'Decades' will be its most ambitious historical drama series to date, and will invite writers to detail how life has changed in Britain since the 1970s.
Jane Tranter, BBC controller of drama commissioning, said: "We are in discussion with a number of writers, and ideas are still being formulated, but the ambition at the heart of this project is to capture the essence of the last four decades, which will resonate with our audience on a very personal level."
It is hoped that 'Decades' will revive BBC Two's reputation for producing epic, esoteric and ambitious historical dramas by drawing on the experience of the country's leading playwrights and authors.
Roly Keating, controller of BBC Two, said: "Within a broad guiding framework we'll be giving the writers huge scope to capture a particular moment of history in the way that they choose.
"The plays will all be very different, but together I believe they will add up to a kind of alternative history of an entire generation."
The corporation has yet to reveal any details on the writers involved in the project, or the possible subjects that might be addressed.
