BBC Three to show Carling Weekend and Radio 1 festivals

LONDON - BBC Three has ramped up its investment in music and is to provide coverage of this summer's Carling Reading and Leeds, and Radio 1's Big Weekend festivals.

The channel will also return to Scotland's T in the Park festival, which it broadcast last year, on July 8 and 9.

The Mean Fiddler-owned Carling Weekend Reading and Leeds festivals over the August Bank Holiday weekend of Friday 25 to Sunday 27, will be live on the channel from 7pm each evening. The headline acts are Franz Ferdinand, Muse and Seattle's original grunge rockers Pearl Jam.

BBC Three will collaborate with Radio 1 to bring viewers highlights of May 13-14's Radio 1's Big Weekend. The full line-up will be announced on Radio 1 on Monday April 24.

Julian Bellamy, who left E4 at the end of last year to become controller of BBC Three, said: "This signals BBC Three's intention to have more live music events of real scale on the channel."

The two events will have a major interactive and online element, with viewers able to press the red button to select a choice of different performances.
