BBC launches WAP and online services for children

LONDON - The BBC has launched its first online search and mobile phone services aimed specifically at children.

Called CBBC Search, the facility will offer children the chance to search content not only on its CBBC website but also 'family friendly' BBC and external sites.

In addition the broadcaster has announced the launch of a mobile phone service for children, giving users the chance to access latest news headlines from youth current affairs programme Newsround

Roy Edmonds CBBC, search editor, said: "We felt it was important to offer children a specific search tool so that they can locate the content that they will be interested in more quickly."

He added that another key factor in setting up the service was latest BBC figures that show more than half of children in the CBBC target age group of seven to 12 years old use the internet to search for content for homework projects.

Ashley Highfield, BBC director of new media and technology, added: "Our research reflects that children are becoming increasingly technologically aware, with the rise in internet use and mobile, and we are simply reacting to the demands of that audience, offering approved, relevant content across easily accessible platforms."
