BBC appoints Taylor to drive £9m out-of-London comedy initiative

LONDON – The BBC has appointed 'Have I Got News for You' maker Hat Trick's comedy head Cheryl Taylor to spearhead a £9m initiative to develop comedy out of London across all its channels.

Taylor will work as executive editor with acting head of comedy commissioning Lucy Lumsden assisting on the commissioning of all in-house and independent scripted comedy.

She will be charged with allocating a £9m budget to find comedy talent outside of London so the corporation has a distinct variety of comedy voices and talents on all of its channels, including digital stations BBC Three, home of 'Little Britain', and BBC Four.

The initiative was set up by BBC director of television Jana Bennett to move commissioning outside the M25 to reflect regional lifestyles.

Most recently, Taylor worked as head of comedy for independent production company Hat Trick, creator of comedy series 'Have I Got News for You', 'Whose Line is it Anyway?' and 'Drop the Dead Donkey'.

While at Hat Trick, Taylor was also given the role as executive producer on BBC One's 'The Worst Week of My Life' starring 'Coupling' actress Sarah Alexander and Ben Miller, one half of Channel 4's comedy show 'Armstrong and Miller', as well as executive producing Channel 4's animated comedy 'Bromwell High' and new ITV pilot series 'Plenty More Fish'.

Prior to joining Hat Trick, Taylor was a former Channel 4 comedy commissioning editor responsible for Simon Pegg's award-winning series 'Spaced', 'Derren Brown's Mind Control' and 'Black Books'.

Jane Lush, BBC controller of entertainment commissioning, said: "Her experience and exemplary track record with Hat Trick and Channel 4 will undoubtedly enhance our skills in bringing the best possible programmes on screen."

Taylor's appointment continues the latest genre commissioning team changes in response to the recent Content Supply, Out of London and Value for Money reviews.

She will take up her new role on September 5.
