Dixon, currently head of planning and scheduling at BBC Two, will swap stations with immediate effect.
The new position will involve Dixon taking responsibility for strategic scheduling across the BBC television portfolio and see him manage key programme brands, such as 'EastEnders', across multiple platforms from TV to mobile and digital. He will also have the key role of planning and scheduling on BBC One.
Dixon joined the BBC in 1996 as a commissioning assistant and went on to become deputy scheduler on BBC One in 1997.
In 2001, he moved to daytime scheduling and has been head of scheduling and planning for BBC Two since 2001, reporting to controllers Jane Root and Roly Keating. This role is soon to be replaced.
In his scheduling career at the BBC, Dixon was responsible for putting 'The Simpsons' across the early evening schedule five nights a week, launching '24' in a 10pm slot on Sundays, and relaunching 'Top Gear' at 8pm on Sundays.
Jana Bennett, director of television, said: "As the management of BBC One content across multiple platforms becomes more important, it seemed the right moment to enhance the role of head of planning and scheduling to embrace the changes in broadcasting."
