The Observer reported at the weekend that the German publishing giant has produced dummies of the title and is planning to launch Cut on August 12. It has stolen several sales staff from rival publisher Dennis, owner of Maxim magazine.
H Bauer, a privately owned company, is believed to be investing £8m in the project, and has recruited Simon Geller, former editor of Men's Health, to lead the initiative. The new magazine will attempt to undercut Zoo and Nuts by selling the first few issues for 50p. The price will later rise to £1.
Cut will be similar in style to its IPC and Emap rivals with football, women and humorous articles.
Nuts is reported to be outselling Zoo, with IPC saying it has sales of around 250,000 a week, compared with the Emap title's figure, which it claims is approaching the 200,000 mark.
Monthly men's title Jack was axed by Dennis Publishing last week due to poor sales. The three-year-old title had a circulation of 40,000 and 10,000 subscribers.
