Audience holds strong as Mike Read is first celeb to go

LONDON - Mike Read, the former Radio 1 DJ, was the first contestant to be booted off 'I'm a Celebrity...' last night as ITV continues to enjoy bumper audiences.

Bookies had been expecting former British athlete Diane Modahl to be first out but Read and former BBC royal reporter Jennie Bond polled fewest votes on last night's 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!'.

Read, who was evicted before he had done a bush tucker trial, leaves the Australian outback after eight days with nine contestants now left behind to battle it out.

John Lydon and Jordan are favourites to win the competition while former popstar Peter Andre could face trouble when he gets kicked out.

Jordan's boyfriend Scott Sullivan has told the press that he plans to confront Andre about the way he has been seriously flirting with the busty model.

"I'm going to be on the next plane out there. I'm going to punch his lights out. I don't like what's going on out there. I'm really p off," Sullivan said.

Last night saw Alex Best become the first contestant to shout "I'm a celebrity... get me out of here" in her bush tucker trial, during which she had to crawl through five perspex tanks containing jungle creatures, including eels, maggots, cockroaches and snakes.

Best, the estranged wife of ruined former Manchester United footballer George Best, won her fellow contestants seven meal stars before retreating.

She picked up seven stars from the first four tanks but shrank before the final tank: "I'm not pleased about that. I would really have loved to have done that. I really have got a real phobia about it. They'll probably put me on the camp fire instead and start eating me," she said.

The shenanigans on 'I'm a Celebrity...' have been a boon for ITV's digital channel ITV2, giving it the kind of success that has seen it surpass some terrestrial viewing figures.

At one point last week, 'I'm a Celebrity... ' was pulling in nearly 3m on ITV2 and is averaging 1.8m as viewers tune in to watch Tara Palmer-Tompkinson and former 'RI:SE' presenter Mark Durden-Smith.

The figures have delighted ITV, which has seen audiences hit almost 11m on ITV1.
