Archant reveals 17% profits increase following major acquisition

LONDON - Regional newspaper and magazine publisher Archant, whose titles include the Eastern Daily Press, has made 2004 pre-tax profits of £32.4m, up 17% on last year.

The results are the first to include a full-year contribution from the 27 weekly titles Archant acquired from Independent News & Media at the end of 2003.

Archant was not able to fully integrate the titles until the acquisition was cleared by the Competition Commission in September 2004.

Turnover was up 17% to £185.6m and chairman Richard Jewson said the company expected to increase profitability in 2005.

More recent acquisitions include Romsey Publishing Group in January and a portfolio of local magazines from Highbury House earlier this week.
